At our most recent Horizon Women’s Project Group session on 22 February, our female members were given various tips and practical advice on how to stay safe. Martial Arts instructor, Uli Gersteneberg, who teaches a Filipino style of martial art, called Modern Arnis, led the workshop, and gave demonstrations of how to keep out of, and to escape from, danger.
Members were introduced to basic forms of self defence: how to punch and kick when attacked, and what parts of the body make the best targets; how to release yourself, if someone grabs you by the wrists, or from behind; how you can defend yourself when sitting, on public transport, for example; and how to use your voice to scare off people.
